About it

Why the Linen Set is made the way it is.

Linen is the only bedding fibre that improves with age, and the reason people give up on it is that new linen feels like a tea towel. Ours is stonewashed for ninety minutes with volcanic rock before it is cut, which takes the first two years of softening off the calendar and puts it in the box.

The flax is grown in Normandy — around 80% of the world's apparel-grade flax comes from that one coastal strip, and buying anywhere else generally means buying the same flax with an extra shipping leg. It is spun and woven in Portugal to 165 gsm, which is heavy enough to drape properly and light enough to sleep under in July.

It wrinkles. That is not a defect we are managing around: a linen that does not wrinkle has been resin-treated, and the treatment is what makes cheap linen feel plasticky and stop breathing. If a crisp flat bed matters to you more than temperature regulation, buy percale cotton instead and we will happily say so.

Care

How to not ruin it.

  1. Warm machine wash with a mild detergent. No fabric softener — it coats the fibre and stops it breathing.
  2. Tumble dry low and take it out slightly damp, then put it straight on the bed. That is the whole ironing strategy.
  3. Expect it to soften noticeably for about three years and then hold. Ours are on a ten-year seam guarantee.
